You’ll stay cozy and save money over the holidays if keep your window coverings functioning properly through the chilly winter months. Here are 4 handy tips to make sure your window treatments are treating you to the holiday cheer that you and your family deserve.
1: Not all window covering materials are the same. Cleaning shutters made of hardwoods may require a slightly different approach than cleaning synthetic materials. Get to know your window treatment materials and then use and the cleaning solutions / methods recommended specifically for these products. Your coverings will last longer and they’ll stay looking great for the Holiday season!
2: Dust. Dusting your Shutters, Blinds or Shades regularly can help keep allergen build-up at bay and thus keeping you and your family sniffle-free during the changing seasonal temperatures. A simple feather duster can sometimes do the trick.
3: Clean deeper when necessary. Sometimes a regular household feather duster isn’t enough to clear debris or stains and buildup that your coverings may have picked up. If that’s the case, you may need to wipe with a microfiber cloth or enlist the help of some good old-fashioned mild soap and water.
4: When in doubt, ask! If the information you’ve found in your research proves inconclusive and you’re not sure of the best way to maintain your window coverings, feel free to ask a window Covering Speciaist at Danmer ! All The Best,
Danmer Custom Shutters
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says that cords from window coverings are one of the top 5 safety hazards in your home. There have been over 500 child strangulation from blinds and shade cords over the past few decades.
Over 5 million window coverings have been recalled in recent years because of injury and death to babies and young children. Recalled products include vertical and horizontal blinds, rollup blinds, Roman shades and roller shades. Strangulation and injury can occur anywhere in the house where children can wrap these cords around their necks or become entangled in the loops. This can happen quickly and silently.
To prevent child strangulation, the CPSC recommends the use of cordless window coverings in homes where children are present.
Safety Matters Checklist:
- Examine all shades & blinds in your home for exposed or dangling cords.
- Make sure there are no accessible cords on the front, side, or back of the product.
- Use Kid Safe Certified cordless window coverings in all homes where children live or visit.
- Position cribs, beds, playpens and other furniture against walls that have no windows and no window cords.
- Permanently anchor all loops on every window covering cord anywhere in your home to the door or to the wall.
- Ask your Danmer Designer how to replace older window treatments with cordless ones. Danmer carries a full line of cordless blinds, shades and custom shutters that are safe for everyone in the family.

Summer is Coming
A wise homeowner would do well to take the signs of summer’s approach as an opportunity to get ahead of the heat and start decorating one’s home to reflect the change in temperature and mood. Those beautiful deep, rich, dark colors of winter should go away during summer weather. Darker colors attract heat, making it nearly impossible to turn a room comfortable and cool. This doesn’t mean, however, that summer colors must be bland.
On the contrary! The latest trend in summer colors are bright and beautiful greens. Splashes of vibrant greens can accent softer whites and beige décor, while providing a continuous bold display of color for your home during the summer months.
But color alone can’t keep you cool. If the goal is to be cool using 2013 summer color trends AND to stay cool, then you should consider colorful sun-beating options for your home’s interior. Here are some things to keep in mind for the summer of 2013.
A Summer of Color and Comfort
This summer is expected to be a celebration of bright, bold color. Splashes of green on bedspreads, rugs and even curtains can transform your home into an ideal summer getaway. Changing out window blinds can also add to your summer theme. Lightly colored blinds can blend well with the greens of the upcoming summer and provide added protection from the sun.
Other Accents to Consider for Your Blinds this Summer
Along with this year’s vibrant green as a preferred summer color, other outdoorsy accents are also being used. Bamboo, oak, reed and other earthy, woodsy accented blinds work well with most spring and summer accents and provide effective refuge from the sun on a hot summer’s day. These styles of blinds are a popular choice due to their durability and flexibility with other seasonal colors.
Customize Your Cool with Custom Blinds
One thing to keep in mind is that not all blinds will work for all windows. Even if you can find the ideal summer blinds to match your summer colors, if they don’t optimally block the sun’s rays, then you’re all fashion and no form. Custom blinds have become a trend with home owners as they can better match your home’s interior as well work better with the shape and form of your windows. Store-bought blinds can only provide so much sun blockage and style. So if you’re looking to t up the cool of your home’s interior this summer, consider custom window blinds.
Don’t wait until it’s too late! Get a jump on your home’s summer interior now.

If you live in California, there is a good chance that you have heard about Thermalite window blinds. They are quickly becoming a preferred choice in homes and businesses alike. Although they have been around since the 1980s, the growing concern for the environment and deforestation has prompted consumers to make more eco-friendly buying decisions.
These Window Blinds Are Perfect for Any Space
It is pretty much impossible to think of an environment where our Thermalite window blinds wouldn’t look just sensational while offering great benefits.
They are made from recycled material, which makes them very attractive to most consumers today, and they insulate better than wood while also providing superior light control! Our Thermalite shutters are fire-retardant, nontoxic and water-resistant, and they even feature an antistatic quality to repel dirt.
These are blinds that will continue to look their best for a very long time because they are guaranteed not to crack, peel or warp, and since they have a painted finish, they won’t turn yellow either. We are so sure of the quality of our products that they come with a generous warrant that is transferable to the next homeowner, should you sell in the future, thereby increasing the value of your home.
When it comes to windows and blinds, there are a lot of decisions to make. Perhaps you absolutely love the look of real wood, but hate the thought of contributing to deforestation. This does not mean that you are stuck with cheap plastic treatments that are prepackaged and sold in stores. Our fauxwood blinds here at Danmer are stunning enough for ever the most elegant room. They come in an array of both soft and rich colors to complement any space.
Making Decisions for Windows and Blinds
Whether you are decorating a new space or giving your home a much needed makeover, the right windows and blinds can make all the difference in the world. A heavy duty steel head rail is used for our fauxwood blinds to ensure stability. They also feature a crash resistant feature to increase safety. These horizontal blinds are high quality and made to last.
Does your house feel as though it is just missing something? Sure, you have a gorgeous couch, a posh chaise and some contemporary art, but there is nothing warm or inviting. If you feel this way, just imagine how your guests must feel, especially those visiting for the first time. Well, making your house feel more like a home could be as easy as adding wooden blinds to your windows.
Our Wooden Blinds are Special
Before you go buy the first wooden blinds you see at the store, you should consider that the wrong ones could quickly become a distraction and take away from the aesthetic of a room. This certainly will do nothing to make the space more inviting.
Our blinds here at Danmer are made from furniture grade basswood that is tightly grained with closed pores. We hand sand to create a gorgeous smooth surface and then finish it the right way so there is no chance of bleeding. If you are missing something in your house and you just can’t quite figure out what it is, make an appointment for a free consultation with one of our specialists today.
Have you ever wondered where windows blinds originated? Most people do not give it much though, and simply take for granted that they are fortunate enough to have them, but they actually have a pretty interesting history.
Although they are popular around the world now, they were actually established in the Mediterranean, long before they became hot in Europe. Then, it was the plantations in the South that helped spread them across America.
A Little History on Windows Blinds
Some believe that windows blinds were first used in Greece. They were crafted from marble or stone and placed across window holes before glass or wood were ever used.
In the 1500s, Spanish explorers reached the United States and Caribbean and colonies began to grow. They grew sugar, rice, cotton and tobacco to sell, and these plantations also contributed to the use of poorly treated slaves. Every plantation became its own community and most goods were traded to England.
Many of the people who owned the land lived in wood houses, and they eventually began to install shutters to keep insects out. They were called plantation shutters. It should also be noted that English and French settlers brought shutters to the East Coast also, including New England and New York areas.
As you are likely already well aware, you get what you pay for. This absolutely includes wood blinds. It can be tempting to opt for fake wood, so you can save some money, but you will end up regretting it, unless they are Thermalite. Sure, cheaper wood styles may look “okay” for a brief time, but they don’t offer the depth, richness or durability that real wood does. Not to mention, faux wood styles are traditionally made and sold in bulk with poor craftsmanship. They also rarely fit like a glove the way quality ones do.
Why Real Wood Blinds are Better
There are some things that many people feel should never be imitation; wood blinds and wood floors are two of them. You do not have to be a professional designer to notice quality when you see it. Real wood complements a space in a way that a cheap imposter can’t.
Real wood is rich and offers warmth to a space. Also, there are no size constraints, so they can often be made for an awkward window. Cheap faux wood ones are flimsy and may turn yellow over time, especially when exposed to direct sunlight every day, but real wood is strong, durable and retains its gorgeous luster year after year.
