Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day

imgresDo you get Memorial Day confused with Veterans Day? The truth is, it happens more often than you think. Here’s a handy cheat sheet to help you differentiate between the two (and be a hit at your Memorial Day BBQ):

Memorial Day:

  • Began as “Decoration Day” (originally celebrated on May 30th) as a day to honor those who were killed in any past war by ‘decorating’ their graves with flowers.
  • Celebrated the last Monday in May.

Veterans Day:

  • Rooted to “Armistice Day,” a day set aside to celebrate the end of World War I in particular.
  • The honor was expanded in 1954 to include all Veterans, and thus renamed Veterans Day to reflect the change.
  • Observed on November 11th.

As we attend gatherings with friends and family this weekend, let us not forget the sacrifices that were made for our freedoms.

Danmer honors the brave men and women of the U.S. Military.  We wish you a safe and happy Memorial Day, from our family to yours.

Are Your Children Safe Inside Your Home?

Child safety and window coveringsStatistics can be alarming, but when it comes to the safety of our children and pets, we can’t be too careful. Did you know that Shades and Blinds can actually turn into lethal hazards for young children. That’s why we’re supporting the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) in their October campaign calling attention to Nationwide Window Cord Safety.

  • There are have been 500 child strangulations caused by blinds and shade cords in the U.S. alone
  • Over five million window coverings have been recalled due to the lethal strangulation danger they pose.
  • Horizontal blinds, vertical blinds, draperies, Roman shades, roll up shades and cellular shades are all responsible for child deaths and injuries.

To help make your home safer for children, the CPSC recommends replacing unsafe window treatments with safer, cordless window coverings.  From shutters to retractable lift cords, cord tensioners to wand controls and even motorized operating systems, we at Danmer want to eliminate potential strangulation hazards caused by dangerous, often ignored cords and loops.

There are also options available to help modify your current window treatments so that they meet current safety standards.  The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) offers repair kits and we at Danmer offer FREE Upgrades to Kid-Safe Cordless Window coverings. You can also download our Kid Safe home safety checklist for free here.Child safety and window coverings

What’s Trending In Home Décor

Screen Shot 2015-10-20 at 2.33.34 PMIt can be a challenge to keep up these days. Trends in fashion, design and technology seem to change at breakneck speed.  There are lots of options to choose from. But only the best ideas, products and services are sustainable as the newest trends come along to take their place.

When it comes to home decorating and home improvement trends, Window treatments can be seen as the focal point of almost any room, so homeowners and designers alike pay special attention to them.  Here are a few Window Covering ideas that are trending right now:

Stripes:  Window treatments that display solid lines make a dramatic and elegant statement.  This illusion can be achieved through vertical blinds, sophisticated plantation shutters and many styles of shades.

Organic Materials:  Everything from bamboo to hardwood grains are now being used to make custom made shutters, blinds and shades.  These materials can add an organic quality to your home while accenting the other earth tones in your decor.

Cool tones:  The ocean and sky lend inspiration to the color palette found in many modern window treatments, particularly in softer blues and greens that are trending now.  Accompanying shades of earth and sand – gold and brown – are used to ground the aquatic atmospheric tones.
Technology:  While look and function are most important in selecting the right window treatment for your home, modern technology is now adding the newest twist in form and function. For example, seamless motorization now make it possible for blinds and shades to be opened and closed with just the flick of a switch or the touch of a button.

What Color Will You Choose for 2015?

Color can bring about a transformation- energizing, refreshing, calming, expanding or warming your home’s space. Take a look at 2015 color trends! Which one are you going to choose?

Dark colors will transform a bedroom into a dreamy, mythical landscape. On the walls,Teal , is a profound hue that adds a measure of mystery and majesty. Clean white trim and lampshades add a light contrast, while Oak is a dark counterbalance in the furniture. Layers of color and texture are found in the bedding, bringing bright pops of color for volume and interest.

An elegant neutral like light Gray on the wall allows rich, folkloric textile patterns and exotic fuchsia to shimmer and shine.

Pastels aren’t just for nurseries anymore – especially when you combine them with zesty modern accents. In this traditional bath, frosty pink walls painted pink blush color have an airy, feminine appeal. To keep the room from feeling “overly sweet,” a pop of Plastic Lime from the “Social Brights” trend palette appears on the vintage tub.

The contrast of pale yellow with the Purple accent is accompanied by a clean white on the fireplace, shelving and window treatments.

From the cool spectrum, powdery light, pale Blue creates a soothing atmosphere of tranquility.

The key to using brights is to use them strategically. They work well when partnered with neutrals, dark hues or light hues. This contemporary dining room is a lively place for a conversation with a feature wall in teal Blue, and painted chair leg accents in dull yellow.

The room is further refined with deep magenta accents in purple grape and offset by walls of light gray. A deep, warm plum, frames the windows and accents shelving.

Modern styling and black and white décor go hand in hand with the vivacious accent  red.
