5 Ways to Avoid Heartbreak in Your Home

vertiglideWhen it comes to your kids, safety is all-important. So did you know that selecting the wrong window coverings can be lethal to infants and young children? Blinds and shades with cords have been responsible for over 500 child strangulations in the last decade alone. Here are a few critical things to know:

  1. Over five million window coverings have been recalled in recent years. Make sure to do your homework before ordering ANY window coverings in your home where children are present.
  1. Horizontal blinds with cords are most responsible for child deaths and injuries. Shutters are the safest window coverings since there are no cords.
  1. Strangulation and injury caused by unsecured cords and loops can happen quickly and silently in any room.
  1. The Good News: There are ways to make window coverings safer for children, including retractable lift cords, cord tensioners, wand controls, and cordless or motorized operating systems. Of course, buying window coverings that have no cords at all, such as shutters, is the safest choice.
  1. Danmer offers FREE Upgrades making your blinds and shades Kid-Safe and Cordless.

Design And Colors Trends In Home

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 11.09.12 AMThough we’re just barely through the first quarter of 2016, there have already been some bold design motifs that are likely to have a big impact on next year’s home decor.

Where one school of design favors bright yellows, reds, and greens to usher in the excitement of spring, another, and perhaps more popular one, relies on more muted colors, such as black, lilac gray, and coffee-like shades of brown. In a year where relaxation and “unplugging” from a world run by technology are key, these monochromatic tones help compliment the lines and shapes created by a sleeker, more streamlined decor. This can include anything from angular and symmetrical arrangements of art and accessories, to the big and blocky furniture that is making a comeback in many homes — all with attention to the relaxation and comfort that many homeowners seek today.

In the kitchen, black stainless steel appliances are becoming very popular and may make their way into many modern kitchens in the near future. And why not? The black appliances look great against gray cabinetry and the other muted colors that we’ve adopted this year.

However you present your home for the remainder of 2016, don’t forget one of the most important details: windows. The light that comes in will directly effect the colors and objects you’ve worked so hard to display. With proper window coverings, the windows, themselves, become part of the decor! For example: shutters, one of the most popular treatments, can add to the square/rectangular motifs, while also applying their lines, textures, and dimensions to your room in any color, shape, or custom design of your choosing.

Window Treatments to Help You Sleep

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 11.09.29 AMAs you may already know, the United States will observe Daylight Saving Time on the March 13th when we’ll set our clocks forward an hour at 2 a.m. (losing an hour), and won’t set them back an hour until November 6th at 2 a.m. (when we’ll gain an hour).  This system, originally conceived by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, was later adopted by many countries in an effort to save electricity and take advantage of early daylight hours.

Though many would agree that the extra daylight is a welcome sight, not to mention a harbinger of warmer weather and more time for outdoor activities, many of the same people would also agree that they’re not looking forward to losing an hour of sleep as a result of the time change!  And what may be even more inconvenient, the season to follow is so full of early morning light that it can become very difficult to sleep in again until fall comes back around.

Fortunately, there are ways to get around it.  The easiest would be to start sleeping in a room with no windows, but where’s the fun in that?  The best option is to treat your windows with adequate window coverings that let you control the amount of sunlight that gets into your home.  Danmer’s Thermalite Shutter Insulating System can be beneficial three-fold:

Thermalite Shutters were specifically designed to reduce energy consumption   by preventing temperature gain or loss through windows.

– This prevention can reduce your home energy bills by up to 35%.

– Thermalite Shutters allow you to have maximum control over incoming light.  Benjamin Franklin would approve!

5 life hacks you need to see to believe!

Any web search is likely to produce pages and pages of home life hacks for projects that may look great in your home, but don’t always offer a practical application to what your home really needs.  The following life hacks are not among them:

Garage “Safety Bumper.”  When pulling into the garage, it can be difficult to gauge how close the car is to the wall.  The poor perception can result in unwanted scratches, dings — or worse!  An easy fix is to cut a foam swimming pool noodle in half, lengthwise, and attach it to the wall so that you can enter without fear and/or damage when the noodle is there to take the impact instead!

“Light” hack.  By mounting a $4 Ikea shelf bracket into a dark corner, and affixing a hanging light bulb from it, it becomes easy to brighten up the darker corners in a room with ease!

Walnut Touch-ups.  Nothing can detract from a wood surface more than scuffs and scratches.  But fear not: by rubbing the inside of an ordinary walnut against damaged areas of a wood surface, the scuffs are covered up and disappear like magic!

Non-slip rugs.  Slippery rugs on slippery surfaces can be a pain — sometimes literally!  But by adding a few strips of acrylic caulk to the bottom, a rug will have the grip it needs to remain stable and prevent you from taking an unwanted “magic carpet ride” across the room.

The classic “cord cabana.”  If you’ve ever had to dig through a drawer full of tangled cables before, you’ll really appreciate this hack.  By coiling cables — everything from phone cords, to USB cables, to any other electronics — and slipping them into vacant toilet paper rolls, you can instantly say goodbye to the random cable chaos!  For added organization, just slip the rolls into a box for easy access and call it good!

Getting your home in order is important, and nobody understands that better than Danmer.  We offer only the best in custom window coverings to accommodate your decor and budget.  Visit us at www.danmer.com or call us at (800) 684-3434 to set up your free in-home consultation.

5 Dining Room Designs To Choose From

Your dining room is that special space where you break bread with friends and loved ones. Of course, it must provide functionality and comfort, but it’s just as important that is presents a welcoming appearance and a personal touch. Dining rooms come in all shapes, sizes, and decors, but the most important feature is the one that represents your family’s personality.  Here are a few of the most popular designs to successfully combine those qualities:

Contemporary Dining Rooms:  Modern dining rooms of the 21st century have many common elements: A rectangular table that’s typically dark in complexion with perhaps unusually-shaped, neutral colored chairs. This isn’t your grandmother’s dining room!  The dining table often seats 6 or more people and is typically arranged near large windows or adjacent to a wall adorned with striking or colorful modern art. Custom Shutters are well suited for the windows in Contemporary dining areas.

Simple Dining Rooms:  Often bathed in browns and golds, the simple approach may vary in shape, such as squares, circles, and small rectangles tables.  4 to 6 traditionally designed chairs are arranged around the tables, and set near large windows and/or walls with complimentary artwork.

Country Dining Rooms:   Unlike their Simple and Contemporary cousins, Country dining rooms are less about tables and more about the surrounding decor.  Tables and matching chairs of all shapes and sizes can fit this theme, but the more traditional and rustic the better!  Surrounding decor will vary, but often includes China cabinets, paintings, and a more ostentatious design scheme than the others.  Nearby windows tend to be an important part of the motif, adorned with colorfully solid or patterned curtains, to complete the room.

Eclectic Dining Rooms:   An Eclectic dining room may look like madness on the surface, but rest assured, there is a method to the madness!  Here, chairs may not match (in color or design), and the colors and shades that can be used are limitless.  If done properly, this dining room will never seem cluttered and no color or object will ever feel out of place.  To lend some continuity to the overall presentation, the dining tables and chairs are typically arranged near windows and various works of art.

Round Table Dining Rooms:   Often centered and symmetrical, the round table can seat anywhere from 4 to 10+ people depending on the diameter of the table.  One advantage is that you can have an odd number of chairs without ever looking “lopsided,” and best of all, you can combine elements from any of the other dining room styles to make the round centerpiece flourish!

As most of these designs rely on the placement and size of nearby windows, it’s important to control the amount of light that will illuminate your dining area — too much can be unpleasant and too little can ruin the natural ambiance that sunlight or moonlight can create.  Larger windows work best with Plantation Shutters, which eliminate these concerns, and add a sleek aesthetic element to an already visually pleasing room.  Contact Danmer at (800) 684-3434 to schedule your free in-home consultation.

Winter Solstice and South Facing Windows

cafe-shuttersSo as of last week, the Earth shifted into winter solstice mode. This causes the Earth’s northern hemisphere (where we in the U.S. live) to receive less sunlight each day until next spring.  This is because the sun rises from south of due east, and sets south of due west, giving us only a 38 degree arc of sunlight –– significantly less than the luminous 86 degree arc we enjoy in the summer. It only sounds complicated, but we all feel this effect every day whether we acknowledge it or not.

As the sun (and temperature) drops, the winter chill can set in rather quickly, especially in areas with colder climates.  One possible remedy for this is to let daylight into your home through south-facing windows to absorb heat in the morning and afternoon, but there is one drawback: exposing windows completely leaves your home vulnerable to too much heat, lack of privacy, and potentially bad window glare as well.

The good news is that there’s no reason for windows to be fully exposed.  Danmer’s Plantation Shutters provide an optimal view and are designed to give you maximum control over incoming sunlight and heat.  In fact, the right Plantation Shutter can lower your home energy bills by up to 35% while maintaining privacy, and adding style and elegance to any room in your home.  Give us a call at (800) 684-3434 to schedule your free in-home consultation, or visit us online at www.danmer.com.

Safe for the Holidays

LJxxuN7IWhBJpq1pAH9G1JRf_AtqN2iP6P_cIevfZpM OK, admit it: It’s easy to get carried away when decorating for the holidays. We all know that one over-the-top neighbor who has to have the jolliest display on the block. Or r perhaps we are that neighbor. But the truth is that sometimes the most extravagant exhibits are not the safest. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to make an impression without sacrificing safety.

You don’t need to resort to plastic reindeer, but there are a number of things you can do safely to create traditionally festive-looking home for the Holidays atmosphere. For example, windows are an obvious focal point, and a great place to display decorations. However, ornaments and certain kinds of lights can be very dangerous if displayed in the window without attention to safety. Of course, there are other ways to keep on the lookout for safe decorating, but here are just a few safe and aesthetically pleasing options to choose from:

  • Ribboned Pinecones. How about dangling a few ribboned pine cones from garland or a on a curtain rod? This will capture the essence of winter with very little fuss.
  • Window Silhouettes. These simple but classic decorations, available in a variety of cutouts and stickers, can infuse any windows with holiday cheer! From snowflakes to reindeer, there are plenty of designs available to customize your windows.
  • Holiday Wreaths. These timeless decorations are typically displayed as a warm greeting at the front door, but can sometimes be adversely affected by winter weather. Try hanging a wreath from the front window where it can be seen by everyone inside and out and be protected from the elements.
Whatever your decor, when holiday decorations are arranged or displayed out of the reach of kids and critters, they can be safely admired by the whole family and make your home a great addition to the neighborhood showcase!

Happy holidays from the Danmer family to yours!
