Winter Solstice and South Facing Windows

January 2, 2016

cafe-shuttersSo as of last week, the Earth shifted into winter solstice mode. This causes the Earth’s northern hemisphere (where we in the U.S. live) to receive less sunlight each day until next spring.  This is because the sun rises from south of due east, and sets south of due west, giving us only a 38 degree arc of sunlight –– significantly less than the luminous 86 degree arc we enjoy in the summer. It only sounds complicated, but we all feel this effect every day whether we acknowledge it or not.

As the sun (and temperature) drops, the winter chill can set in rather quickly, especially in areas with colder climates.  One possible remedy for this is to let daylight into your home through south-facing windows to absorb heat in the morning and afternoon, but there is one drawback: exposing windows completely leaves your home vulnerable to too much heat, lack of privacy, and potentially bad window glare as well.

The good news is that there’s no reason for windows to be fully exposed.  Danmer’s Plantation Shutters provide an optimal view and are designed to give you maximum control over incoming sunlight and heat.  In fact, the right Plantation Shutter can lower your home energy bills by up to 35% while maintaining privacy, and adding style and elegance to any room in your home.  Give us a call at (800) 684-3434 to schedule your free in-home consultation, or visit us online at www.danmer.com.

Safe for the Holidays

December 23, 2015

LJxxuN7IWhBJpq1pAH9G1JRf_AtqN2iP6P_cIevfZpM OK, admit it: It’s easy to get carried away when decorating for the holidays. We all know that one over-the-top neighbor who has to have the jolliest display on the block. Or r perhaps we are that neighbor. But the truth is that sometimes the most extravagant exhibits are not the safest. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to make an impression without sacrificing safety.

You don’t need to resort to plastic reindeer, but there are a number of things you can do safely to create traditionally festive-looking home for the Holidays atmosphere. For example, windows are an obvious focal point, and a great place to display decorations. However, ornaments and certain kinds of lights can be very dangerous if displayed in the window without attention to safety. Of course, there are other ways to keep on the lookout for safe decorating, but here are just a few safe and aesthetically pleasing options to choose from:

  • Ribboned Pinecones. How about dangling a few ribboned pine cones from garland or a on a curtain rod? This will capture the essence of winter with very little fuss.
  • Window Silhouettes. These simple but classic decorations, available in a variety of cutouts and stickers, can infuse any windows with holiday cheer! From snowflakes to reindeer, there are plenty of designs available to customize your windows.
  • Holiday Wreaths. These timeless decorations are typically displayed as a warm greeting at the front door, but can sometimes be adversely affected by winter weather. Try hanging a wreath from the front window where it can be seen by everyone inside and out and be protected from the elements.
Whatever your decor, when holiday decorations are arranged or displayed out of the reach of kids and critters, they can be safely admired by the whole family and make your home a great addition to the neighborhood showcase!

Happy holidays from the Danmer family to yours!

December 4, 2015

4 Tips to Make Your Window Coverings Last Longer

November 19, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-11-18 at 10.34.20 PMYou’ll stay cozy and save money over the holidays if keep your window coverings functioning properly through the chilly winter months. Here are 4 handy tips to make sure your window treatments are treating you to the holiday cheer that you and your family deserve.

1:  Not all window covering materials are the same.  Cleaning shutters made of hardwoods may require a slightly different approach than cleaning synthetic materials.  Get to know your window treatment materials and then use and the cleaning solutions / methods recommended specifically for these products. Your coverings will last longer and they’ll stay looking great for the Holiday season!

2:  Dust.  Dusting your Shutters, Blinds or Shades regularly can help keep allergen build-up at bay and thus keeping you and your family sniffle-free during the changing seasonal temperatures. A simple feather duster can sometimes do the trick.

3:  Clean deeper when necessary.  Sometimes a regular household feather duster isn’t enough to clear debris or stains and buildup that your coverings may have picked up.  If that’s the case, you may need to wipe with a microfiber cloth or enlist the help of some good old-fashioned mild soap and water.

4:  When in doubt, ask!  If the information you’ve found in your research proves inconclusive and you’re not sure of the best way to maintain your window coverings, feel free to ask a window Covering Speciaist at Danmer ! American Pride

November 12, 2015

unnamedIn honor of Veterans Day 2015, we at Danmer would like to thank the proud men and women who have represented the United States in all branches of our armed forces.  Without their dedication and the sacrifices they have made for the common good, the United States would not be the proud nation that it is today.

Did you know that the national holiday we celebrate this week was originally created to mark the end of World War I on November 11th, 1918? Specifically it marks the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning—the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918.

However much has changed in the observance of this sacred holiday over the years.  This day was originally declared “Armistice Day,” with the holiday set aside to honor those who lost their lives in “the great war,” as WW1 was called. We were asked to remember November 11th as a day to enjoy the peace our nation had found and had hoped would follow.  Nearly 40 years later (in 1947), the holiday was renamed “Veterans Day,” and would be repurposed to honor American soldiers who’ve served in any of America’s conflicts.

Danmer is a proud supporter of American values and is making efforts to help rebuild America’s economy.  Danmer Shutters are made and assembled right here in the USA, so we know that investing in your home is an investment in rebuilding America.  Visit us at http://www.danmer.com to learn more.

Halloween Décor for Your Home

October 27, 2015

unnamedHalloween is here, and decorating your home to be ‘spooky’ can be fun for you and your whole family. Adding that “wow” factor to your Halloween display can turn your home into a real neighborhood showcase.

So, what are the best ways to keep up with the “Munsters” in creating a truly creepy, yet tasteful experience for your kids and your neighbors?  Keep your main focus on your home’s exterior and entryway.  The first thing that your trick-or-treaters see on their way to your front door is crucial in setting the mood for your ghoulish gathering.  Here are three simple tips to help you get started:

  • EXTERIOR “HORROR” LIGHTING.  The right lights positioned at just the right angle (typically from below), can help create a creepy ambiance!
  • WEBS.  Pre-packaged or homemade webs are budget friendly, and effective! Using large webs strategically placed can have a ghostly and fun effect, while getting your visitors into the Halloween spirit.
  • SCARY WINDOWS.  Silhouetted window decorations can be accomplished for pennies on the dollar. Draping a few bats along your shutters, or using spooky skeletons to peer out of your other window coverings can make for a very frightful sight indeed!

Remember the basics while adding your own personal flair, and you just may end up with the most haunted house on the block!

Happy Halloween!

Advice for Your Kitchen Makeover

October 21, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-10-19 at 11.14.33 AMSeeing your kitchen windows with brand new shutters for the first time can be a revelation! Who knew the kitchen could take on such a sophisticated look? Well, this is what happens when you invest the right amount of time and energy into your home improvement projects. In the midst of all the excitement to get your renovation done, however, many homeowners overlook one crucial detail that can significantly extend the life span of their new window coverings: the choice of materials for your shutters or blinds.

Your kitchen shutters, for example, must be able to withstand exposure to moisture from the sink , from cooking and from the dishwasher. Choosing shutters for your kitchen – or even a bathroom for that matter – that are made from solid hardwood may not be a wise choice. Over time, wood is guaranteed to warp, chip, peal and even discolor from the effects of water and moisture.

How to avoid this costly mistake? Make sure you get design help from a Window Covering Design Specialist through a FREE in-home consultation right at the beginning of your renovation project. Make sure your selections are a good balance of beauty and function. Chances are you’ll avoid premature wear and tear of your window coverings in the long run.

So EXACTLY what material should you choose for areas of your home that often contain higher amounts of heat and moisture? The answer is a synthetic material for shutters or blinds are your best choice. Genuine Thermalite shutters from Danmer are water resistant, flame retardant, and guaranteed to never crack peel or discolor, making them a perfect fit for kitchens and bathrooms. If you’re looking for a natural wood grain look, select a water resistant faux wood option that will bring elegance to your room, while holding up well in moisture and humidity.

Are Your Children Safe Inside Your Home?

October 13, 2015

Child safety and window coveringsStatistics can be alarming, but when it comes to the safety of our children and pets, we can’t be too careful. Did you know that Shades and Blinds can actually turn into lethal hazards for young children. That’s why we’re supporting the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) in their October campaign calling attention to Nationwide Window Cord Safety.

  • There are have been 500 child strangulations caused by blinds and shade cords in the U.S. alone
  • Over five million window coverings have been recalled due to the lethal strangulation danger they pose.
  • Horizontal blinds, vertical blinds, draperies, Roman shades, roll up shades and cellular shades are all responsible for child deaths and injuries.

To help make your home safer for children, the CPSC recommends replacing unsafe window treatments with safer, cordless window coverings.  From shutters to retractable lift cords, cord tensioners to wand controls and even motorized operating systems, we at Danmer want to eliminate potential strangulation hazards caused by dangerous, often ignored cords and loops.

There are also options available to help modify your current window treatments so that they meet current safety standards.  The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) offers repair kits and we at Danmer offer FREE Upgrades to Kid-Safe Cordless Window coverings.
