Repurpose Old Window Shutters

November 28, 2016
monday_november-28

Have you ever thought about what you might do with those older shutters  – interior or exterior shutters – that you’re finally going to replace with quality Danmer window coverings? Turns out, there are some really cool DIY (Do-It-Yourself) ideas to turn old shutter panels into something useful and even highly decorative in and around your house.

These kind of DIY projects are easy and affordable. And if you’re replacing older NON-DANMER shutters with some new ones, you might as well put the old ones to use if you can. Or you can simply look for older vintage shutters being tossed out when your neighbors are replacing window coverings. You can brush paint them, spray paint them, or treat to a cool spontaneous paint technique. They make great tables, chairs, decorative walls pieces as well as mantels and doors to cabinets.

Tips To Easily Clean Your Shutters, Blinds and Shades

November 14, 2016
monday_november-14

Since we’re all getting ready for the holidays, it’s tough to find the time to finish home projects we may have started throughout the year.

Here’s a quick way to brighten up your home for the holidays: clean those dusty blinds, shades or shutters. Your guests will notice that something is fresh and new in your home, and all you’ve done is a simple refresh.  That way next year you won’t have to devote several Saturdays to cleaning the house.

CLEAN YOUR SHUTTERS WITH EASE: Window shutters can be either decorative or functional, and often times are both. Whether they are Danmer Thermalite, Heritage Wood, Ultraluxe or Plantation Shutters, they’ve added beauty and character to any home. However, over time, your shutters will collect dust, and their beauty can easily be overlooked. Routine cleaning is not only recommended, it is absolutely necessary. The good news is that shutters, are relatively easy to maintain, and cleaning is a breeze. Use a soft cotton cloth and mild soap and water to wipe the louvers, and then dry immediately with a clean dry cloth. Do not use any harsh chemicals or ammonia based cleaners. Throughout the year, you can use a feather duster to keep them dust free in all seasons.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR SHADES: It’s important not to begin by spot cleaning your shades. Start by dusting the shades, instead of starting with the stains. Whether your shades are Honeycomb shades, Roman shades, Sheers and Shading, or Solar or Roller Shades begin your cleaning process by using your vacuum’s suction hose with the soft brush attachment. Work your way from side to side all the way down the shade, and see the dust disappear.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR BLINDS: Regular cleaning will keep your Wooden Blinds, Skyline Panels, Solid & Stained Wood Blinds, Faux Wood Blinds and Vertical Blinds looking and working like new.

Your grandmother probably used this trick for cleaning blinds:

  • Fill a small bowl with white vinegar and find a pair of clean cotton gloves or socks
  • Put your hand inside one of the gloves or socks and dip the tip of the sock, or your fingers into the bowl
  • Run your hand or fingers along each slat to remove the dust and grime. You may need to rinse the sock or glove a few times
  • Switch back and forth between the two socks or gloves, soaking one sock or glove while you use the other

Important: Although this method is safe for most materials, do not oversaturate the blinds, especially if they are wooden. Water warps wood, so squeeze as much out as possible and dry immediately. Avoid letting the vinegar come into contact with your eyes or skin.

Advice for Your Kitchen Makeover

October 21, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-10-19 at 11.14.33 AMSeeing your kitchen windows with brand new shutters for the first time can be a revelation! Who knew the kitchen could take on such a sophisticated look? Well, this is what happens when you invest the right amount of time and energy into your home improvement projects. In the midst of all the excitement to get your renovation done, however, many homeowners overlook one crucial detail that can significantly extend the life span of their new window coverings: the choice of materials for your shutters or blinds.

Your kitchen shutters, for example, must be able to withstand exposure to moisture from the sink , from cooking and from the dishwasher. Choosing shutters for your kitchen – or even a bathroom for that matter – that are made from solid hardwood may not be a wise choice. Over time, wood is guaranteed to warp, chip, peal and even discolor from the effects of water and moisture.

How to avoid this costly mistake? Make sure you get design help from a Window Covering Design Specialist through a FREE in-home consultation right at the beginning of your renovation project. Make sure your selections are a good balance of beauty and function. Chances are you’ll avoid premature wear and tear of your window coverings in the long run.

So EXACTLY what material should you choose for areas of your home that often contain higher amounts of heat and moisture? The answer is a synthetic material for shutters or blinds are your best choice. Genuine Thermalite shutters from Danmer are water resistant, flame retardant, and guaranteed to never crack peel or discolor, making them a perfect fit for kitchens and bathrooms. If you’re looking for a natural wood grain look, select a water resistant faux wood option that will bring elegance to your room, while holding up well in moisture and humidity.

SEEING BEYOND WINDOWS

October 2, 2015

90212798755504129_yO7gG47l_fSometimes it can be difficult to just throw things away…especially if they were expensive to begin with. What’s the best solution to replace the old without feeling like you’ve missed out on its full potential? The answer is simple: Good old fashioned repurposing.

Imagine you’re remodeling your home and you’re replacing those old windows with newer, sturdier ones. Perhaps you’re having Danmer’s genuine American made Plantation Shutters designed and installed in your new windows. So what can you do with the original window materials that you’re replacing? Here are a few ideas:

Frames: Many window frames can be repainted and re-purposed as picture frames, or to frame artwork, certificates, or even mirrors!

Headboards: Even large/old windows can add an artistic flavor when displayed behind your bed… think old world decor!

Framed info boards: A good frame, sans glass, can contain a small bulletin board or dry erase board, while adding an essence of style and flair in your home office!

Art displays: Glass panes themselves can easily become works of art when coated with a little paint or other arts & crafts materials of your choice.

Room divider: The more windows you have to work with, the more you can do! The frames of multiple windows can be combined to make an interesting, edgy room divider. It’s sure to be a conversation starter!

Regardless of how you handle unused windows and frames, make sure the new ones are energy efficient, aesthetically pleasing, and made by American craftsman for exceptional quality! Visit Danmer’s website to learn more: http://danmer.com/

Make Your Sunroom More Comfortable with Window Coverings

August 29, 2012

The whole purpose of a sunroom is to feel like you are outside without dealing with the bugs, right? Well, that and the fact that you can sit out there when it rains too! That being said, a sunroom can get hot incredibly fast, even on a mild day. In fact, it can become so hot that you don’t even want to sit out there, and certainly warmer than it would be if you sat outside and dealt with the bugs. Well, the simply solution is to simply add window coverings for light control.

Which Type of Window Coverings are Right for Your Sunroom?

Choosing window coverings for a sunroom is typically a lot harder than picking some for the rest of your home. Although there are a lot of styles to choose from, the two most important features is that they fit properly and that they provide superior light control.

Here at Danmer, we understand how important it is that these coverings complement your space and fit perfectly. Otherwise, you still have the bright and very hot sun shining through, which does nothing but make you even more frustrated that you wasted your money. For this reason, we provide a free consultation, so you can make sure that you get the right coverings for your space, and that the windows are measured properly to ensure a perfect fit.

Contemporary Window Coverings for Your Home

February 16, 2012

An easy way to improve the look of your home is to update your aged and dated window treatments. Contemporary window coverings are much lighter than the heavy and dark curtains of the past. To update and brighten the rooms of your home try out different fabrics and colors. Window coverings like roman shades can be made from a variety of natural fibers that can bring a subtle element of nature into a room. Choosing the right window coverings is also about finding what works in terms of function as well as style. A room that gets direct sunlight for most of the day can quickly become hot or uncomfortable. Find window coverings that easily filter light rather than completely block it out to still make the most of the natural light. Some options are light wood blinds, cellular shades, or fabric roller shades.
