Designer Spotlight: Michael McKendree

October 18, 2017

October Designer of the Month

Michael Mckendree - October Designer of the Month for Danmer

Get to know our October designer of the month, Michael McKendree! Michael and his partner of 37 years, live in Palm Springs, Ca. They moved from the San Francisco Bay area 8 years ago, mostly to slow down a bit. Over the span of his career as an Interior Designer, Michael has been very lucky to work with some great clients and projects such as: a 20,000sq ft mansion in Saratoga for Arnold Swartzennegger and Developer Robert Emami. He has also decorated and hosted a fundraiser for Palin and McCain, which featured design inspiration such as old world French with 35ft curtains, the budget was over the top coming in at over 80K and also featured fine threads by Italy’s Etro. While working on this project, Michael was also consulting on Kid G’s penthouse at the new Millennium Tower in San Francisco this projected included a zebra rug in his kitchen! Then he worked for Michael Chiarello Napa Style Stores in Marin, which featured hay on the floor.  He also helped design showrooms at the San Francisco and Denver Design Centers for modern kitchen cabs and appliances, and has also worked for Clarence House and Ralph Lauren.

Michael’s mom was an interior designer and he missed a lot of time from school as he was always working with her, thus he attended 5 different high schools and 3 colleges! Michael stays fit and maintains an active lifestyle, at one point he was really good at tennis and fencing. At 15, he even had a stint as a professional ice skater, which seemed “to keep me fit and looking good and on the track to health and fitness”.

“Life is to be enjoyed not endured”

Style and Design Trends

What Inspires You: New clients inspire me and when they are willing to be brave, try new ideas and listen to my ideas. I love to fight back and fourth with couples over design ideas, it means they are serious!

What’s a recent design trend you’re loving or following. Any one can spend a million to make a place look good, but try to spend less and make it look like a million is talent

Custom Shutters in the living room!Blinds, Shades or Shutters… what is your preference? I like the shutters crowd. They are very aware and in touch young and old. The product is great because it adds a lot of value to the clients lifestyle in many ways. Having said that, I love Hunter Douglas Duettes and Roller Shades.

Kid Safe Window Coverings

October 10, 2017

Kids Safe Window Treatments

October is National Window Covering Safety Month!!

Did you know that window coverings can be a beautiful but hidden danger that many parents may overlook. Children are susceptible to injuries and even deaths by cords from some window coverings. Kid safe window coverings come in a variety of beautiful fashions that pose no risk to your family. The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are urging consumers to check their window coverings for exposed or dangling cords which can pose a strangulation hazard to infants and young children.

Window Cord Safety – What to Look For…
Children and window covering cords don’t mix. When cords are accessible to small children, these seemingly harmless products may become strangulation hazards. This is especially important with older window coverings that may not meet the latest national standard for window cord safety.

If you have corded window coverings and can’t replace them with today’s safer products, check for the follow hazards:

  • Move all cribs, beds, furniture and toys away from windows and window cords, preferably to another wall.
  • Make sure that tasseled pull cords are as short as possible.
  • Continuous-loop cords on draperies and vertical blinds should be permanently anchored to the floor or wall.
  • Keep all window cords well out of the reach of children. Eliminate any dangling cords.
  • Check that cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit the movement of inner lift cords.

What does it mean when window covering boxes say “child safe” on them?

  • This means the product complies with the WCMA/ANSI (Window Coverings Manufacturers Association) standard.

If a product complies with the WCMA/ANSI safety standard does that mean its safe?

  • Not entirely! This safety standard is developed and written by the manufactures. Long operational or pull cords, accessible inner cords and faulty tension devices all comply with the most current 2014 WCMA/ANSI safety standard.

How can I tell if a window covering is safe for children?

  • If the window covering has no accessible cords, front and back, it is safe.

If at all possible, use only cordless window coverings in homes where infants and young children are present.

From shutters to retractable lift cords to wand controls and even motorized operating systems, Danmer offers a wide array of child proof, 100% non-toxic materials and finishes with our shutters and other window covering options.  This ensures safety with no harmful toxic effects, cords or other hazzards.
